Flourish: My Word for 2018

For some people, the week between Christmas and New Year’s Day is a strange limbo zone.

Not me. In the past, I’ve taken this week to slow down. Take a break from work and rejuvenate. Spend time with my kids, who are on break from school. Or catch up on my reading.

This year has been different. While I am taking some down time, I’ve also been in deep planning for 2018. I’m closing out 2017 and writing down my intentions and goals for next year. It’s a different kind of work. Different than writing blog posts or planning social media shares.

As part of my planning, I choose a word for the year. The word represents my intention for the year.  For 2017, my word was Build. In 2016, it was Execute. For some reason, I’ve been very resistant about choosing a word for 2018. The main reason is that my brain has been too busy. I knew I needed to slow down in order to dig deep for my word.

I’ve been debating between two words. Both have very similar meanings, but which one felt right? One word called out to me each time I had this internal debate.

My word for 2018 is Flourish.

Before I go into why I chose this word, I have to credit Lisa Jacobs’ book Your Best Year 2018. The productivity workbook and planner (available in business and life edition) helped me to slow down and close out 2017. I needed to see clearly what worked and what didn’t work for me this year. It wasn’t easy to fill out the pages in the workbook. It’s hard to admit my weaknesses and mistakes. And doubly hard for me to celebrate my wins.

Your Best Year 2018 Workbook by Lisa Jacobs

What makes Your Best Year 2018 different from the other workbooks I’ve used? It’s the perfect balance of woo-woo feelings and actionable goal setting. I read her Marketing Playbook in early November and found myself nodding and “yessing” to so much of it.

Her philosophy on marketing authentically gelled with mine. So it was a no brainer to purchase Your Best Year 2018. I bought the digital version to print out and punch into my binder (more on that in a different post). You can also purchase already printed copies of both the Your Best Year 2018 business and life versions. It also comes with a 2018 planner that includes monthly and quarterly pages to check in with your goals.

Warning: this is not a workbook you can power through in one sitting. It’s emotionally exhausting, but in a good way. In order to truly grow in my life and business, I knew I needed to answer the questions and prompts truthfully. I’m still working through the pages to plan out 2018. Taking time with this is a good thing.

Why I Chose Flourish

This year I’ve built momentum in my business, Bawdy Bookworms. I feel like I’m on the cusp of something. I don’t know exactly what this something will be, but it will be good. And big. The universe is looking out for me–as long as I work on my business consistently.

I’ve spent the last 2 years building the foundation for Bawdy Bookworms. Now it’s time to thrive (my second choice world) and truly let the business flourish. When my business flourishes, it will spread into other parts of my life. I know it. I feel it.

I believe it.

Of course, I can’t just rely on an intention and a feeling. I still have to put in the hard work of setting goals and action steps to achieve my those goals. This is where  Your Best Year 2018 will come in. I’m keeping it on my desk and plan on using it to stay on track.

Doubt is normal for entrepreneurs, but I have no doubt that as long as I push forward, I will succeed.

What is your word for 2018?
