Why I Can’t Break Up With Foursquare

My Foursquare badges-I want more!

Foursquare is like the bad boy I keep going back to. You know he’s not worth the trouble, but he’s so fun!

If you’re not familiar with Foursquare, it’s a social media platform where you can “check-in” to places that you go to. Visit the same place enough times (but only once a day), and you can become the mayor. Since it’s social media, you can friend people and see where they’ve gone too. You also earn badges and can see tips other users have left for each store, restaurant, venue, etc. You download the app to your smartphone and it figures out where you are via its GPS.

When I first heard of Foursquare, I didn’t understand the allure of it. Sure it’s a game and you earn points. I have yet to figure out what the points mean. “Do you win something?” people ask me. Not really. Just the satisfaction of earning the Barista badge for visiting five different Starbucks or the Bender badge for going out late too many nights in a role.

Still, I have a love-hate relationship with Foursquare. Sometimes it can’t figure out where I am. Maybe it’s the GPS on my smartphone. It’s very frustrating when I’m attempting to become the mayor of my local Target! Or it thinks I’m actually miles away from where I actually am.

Even worse, sometimes Foursquare won’t even return my phone calls! He tells me he’s too busy to look me up. I can’t even check in anywhere. I feel like I give and I give and I give some more, but he never gives anything in return. If it was a real life boyfriend, I would have dumped him long ago.

As much as I try to break-up with Foursquare, I can’t. Every time I earn a badge or oust Tiddah as the mayor of Target, I get an adrenaline rush. I keep coming back to him.

Time to hit the Target again. I got ousted by Tiddah again. Oh, and I need milk.
