Why I Took More Selfies at BlogHer

Thien-Kim at #BlogHer15

If you follow me on Instagram, you might have noticed that I shared a ton of selfies last weekend at BlogHer. I didn’t plan on taking so many selfies. In fact, I used to hate taking photos of myself. I’m much more comfortable behind the camera.

Blogging conferences might look like a huge party for those who aren’t at the event, but they are reunions for us. We sit behind our monitors everyday and “talk” to our online friends. Blogging is mostly solo work. In fact, I have many blogger friends in the DC area that I hardly see. Except at blogging conferences–in a different state no less.

As an extroverted introvert at conferences, I stay sane by spending time with a small group of people. Sometimes it’s just me and one friend. We hang together for a couple of hours and go our separate ways.

After the initial hugs and catch-up conversation, I asked my friends to take a selfie with me. Seeing them IRL (in real life) makes me so happy that I must capture that moment. Let’s freeze those moments of happiness in a photo.

Looking at these photos make me smile and the joy and excitement of our get together warms my heart. Totally sappy, but true.

Taking selfies isn’t selfish. The more selfies I take of myself (and my friends), the more I’ve learned to accept how I look. My skin might not be perfect (thank you Samsung Galaxy S6 beauty filter for trying). My hair might be flat that day. My smile will always be crooked. But that’s who I am. Learning to love myself means also learning to love my physical self too.

We have the technology to take easily take photos of ourselves. Why not use it document more than just our lunch or our kids? Taking more selfies means taking more spousies too.

Will you join me in taking more selfies?

P.S. I took waaaay more selfies than what I’ve shared here. I didn’t want to inundate my readers–but if we took one together, know that I’m printing them out for my office!
