Last week was a rough one. Physically and mentally.
The flu means business when it hits. Chills, fevers, coughing–the whole works. As I was bedridden, my feverish brain still couldn’t stop thinking.
Like Adele, I’m now on the other side. Just in time for beautiful spring weather. Sunny afternoons. Birds chirping. My cats stalking emaciated squirrels (from their window perch).
Here are the random things I thought about while I was sick with the flu
1. My husband is amazing. He took 2 days off of work to take care of me, including dragging me to urgent care and helping me pick out cans of white people soup at Target. I was in no condition to cook or else I’d make Vietnamese chicken chao (similar to congee). That’s what I make when the kids are sick. He also took the kids to school, picked them up, fed them, and took them to karate class.
2. I will watch almost any tv when I’m sick. My husband and I caught up on episodes of our favorite tv shows like NCIS, NCIS: New Orleans, The Big Bang Theory, and Fresh Off the Boat. I also powered through season 2 of The Mysteries of Laura, which grew on me. You guys, season 2 ended with a major cliffhanger and the show might be cancelled! What will I do? Thankfully, I felt better on Friday and managed to binge watch season 3 and part of season 4 of House of Cards.
3. I missed cooking. Taking a break from cooking meals for almost 5 days sounds like a mini-vacation. By the time Friday rolled around, I was jonesing to get back in the kitchen. Alas, I could barely stay upright for more than 20 minutes so that was out of the question. This weekend, I’m going on a baking spree. Wild times, I tell ya.
4. Sleeping through the night is underrated. I tossed and turned a ton thanks to the crazy fever. I didn’t sleep through the night until my fever broke, which was either Thursday night or Friday day. It felt good.
5. I missed the kids. My husband kept Sophia and Jaxson out of our bedroom until my fever broke. That meant 3 days barely seeing their adorable faces before and after school. We didn’t want them to catch the flu, but I missed their hugs and kisses.
6. My family managed just fine without me. This is a double edged sword, isn’t it? Like many mothers, I’m the person that keeps the household running smoothly. But my husband and the kids survived the week without me. I didn’t have to worry about them while I rested.
7. Next year I’m getting a flu shot. Enough said.
A farewell to the flu. Don’t come back for a few years, ok?
