Corner Bakery Cafe Grilled Flats Review at I'm Not the Nanny

Last week I was invited to Corner Bakery Cafe to try out their new “UNFlat” Grilled Flats. I wasn’t sure what to expect, but I was impressed that many of their ingredients are made onsite at your local Corner Bakery Cafe. That’s not something you see often at in fast casual restaurants.

The foodie in me threw tons of questions at Chef Ric Scicchitano, who developed all the sandwiches we sampled. He graciously answered all of my questions. Ric’s official title is Executive Vice President, Food & Supply Chain, but I’ll call him the Grilled Flats Mastermind. He demoed how each sandwich was made and explained why he chose each flavor component.

The grilled flat sandwiches been available on the west coast for a while, but today they are available nationwide, including the DC metro area. The 4 sandwiches we tasted are usually made on white flatbread but you can substitute for the whole grain version. The sandwiches are hearty, flavorful, and under 330 calories.

Corner Bakery Southwest Chicken Grilled Flat Review via I'm Not the Nanny

My favorite was the Southwest Chicken. It comes with all natural grilled chicken, a zesty slaw, corn and tomato salsa, house-pickled jalapenos, and avocado ranch dressing. It’s an flavor explosion in your mouth. Lots of different textures and the jalapenos were crunchy with just the right amount of kick.

Corner Bakery BBQ Pork Grilled Flat Review via I'm Not the Nanny

My second favorite was the BBQ Pork made with pulled pork shoulder, a slightly sweet smoky BBQ sauce, crispy pickled onions (made in house), tangy slaw, and avocado ranch dressing. Usually I’m not a fan of pulled pork BBQ sandwiches as the sauce is always too heavy and sweet. Not so with this flat sandwich. The sauce is only slightly sweet with a hint of smokiness with the crunchy, sweet and slightly spicy pickled onions to balance the sauce. Throw on some pickled jalapenos and this would be my favorite! (Which they’ll totally do for you–just ask.)

If you’re looking for something a bit lighter, try the Chicken Caesar or Caprese grilled flats. The flats can also be ordered as a combo with homemade soup or salad.

I’m definitely pining for a Corner Bakery Cafe closer to me. I’m not a big sandwich eater, but these grilled flats are no ordinary sandwiches. They’re hearty with multi-layered flavors.
