Make Tooth Brushing Fun For Kids-I'm Not the Nanny

Getting my kids to brush their teeth and brush their teeth for the requisite 2 minutes once a day is tough. Wait, they’re supposed to brush their teeth twice a day? Darn, this parenting gig is tricky. I thought once my kids were past the toddler stage and could brush their own teeth, I wouldn’t have to supervise as much. I’ll bet you are laughing now. Thankfully, with a little brainstorming from our family, we resorted to some crazy ways to make tooth brushing fun and exciting for the kids.

Play dentist. Most of us dread going to the dentist, but my kids’ aunt turned “playing dentist” into a tooth brushing game for Jaxson. When he was around 3 years old, he wanted to do everything my sister did. Only his aunt was allowed to read him bedtime stories, tuck him in, and brush his teeth. The two of them would sit together in the bathroom while Auntie Dentist brushed his teeth. She had him spit at the appropriate times. The only problem with playing dentist was that once my sister’s visit was over, guess who had to play dentist with him? Me.

Make it a competition. I once vowed that I wouldn’t make everything a competition with my kids. My parents did that to my sister and I and we hated it. Both Sophia and Jaxson are naturally competitive so that went out the window. Like any good parent, I used that to my advantage. Check out the video of the kids “competing” as they brushed their teeth.

All of these crazy methods take a lot of energy. I needed something easier. Enter  (available for iOS and Android).

Thanks to Oral-B Disney Timer App, my kids beg to brush their teeth.

Oral-B Disney Timer App-I'm Not the Nanny

The timer encourages kids to brush their teeth twice a day with a counter that reveals a “sticker” as they brush. Kids can view all their stickers in their photo album. Each child has a profile in the app that they can personalize with their favorite Disney character. Jaxson’s favorite is the Hulk, but he enjoys changing it up. Sophia is all about the Princesses, of course. You can also scan Oral-B toothbrushes and Crest toothpaste to unlock fun surprises.

Jaxson loves the app so much he begs to brush his teeth right after dinner. We have to remind him to get ready for bed first. Even Sophia, who’s 8, enjoys brushing with the app. As for me, I smile when I hear the app’s music and the ticking timer because I know my kids are having fun brushing their teeth. If your kids are fans of Disney and Marvel characters, give the app a try.
