Isn’t Sophia’s robot cute? |
Our family has been LeapFrog fans since Sophia was three years old. Our stash of Tag books, Leapster and the LeapPad receive constant play in our home. I’m glad to see that LeapFrog is now offering apps for the iPad and iPhone (iOS 5.0+), because both kids love playing games together on our family’s iPad. Leapfrog’s new MyRobot Friend quickly won kudos from the kids.
As a parent, I was eager to try out MyRobot Friend because the app is geared for kids ages 7+. It’s easy to find educational apps geared for preschoolers, but finding quality educational apps for Sophia is more challenging. In MyRobot Friend, players control their very own robot through a variety of logic puzzles and challenges. For each level, players use cards with numbers and compass directions to program their robot to reach his goal, a treasure chest. As they play, more things such as rockets and shrink rays become available. The app also includes mini-games such as dance party, spelling bee, and save the monkey.
Sophia walked me through her most recent level, “It’s a Fat Cat World,” where she has to prove a monocle-wearing fat cat that her robot is in charge. I was pretty impressed by how adept she was at solving the puzzle. I listened to her thought process as she programmed her robot to defeat the fat cat’s robot. Personally, I’m not sure I would have figured it out as quickly.
I asked Sophia about her favorite things about MyRobot Friend. She enjoys the problem solving, the story line, and the ability to customize her robot. By the ways her eyes lit up, I could tell that solving the puzzles gave her confidence in her problem solving skills. Not only is she learning to think critically, but she’s having fun while doing it. My science and engineering loving kid is eating up MyRobot Friend!
Of course her little brother Jaxson wants to do everything his big sister did. While he loves counting, he’s not quite ready for MyRobot Friend. So Sophia sat down with Jaxson and walked him through the first couple of levels. Aren’t they cute? Because you can create different profiles in the app, Sophia was able to teach him how to play without affecting her game play. Sophia even convinced her dad to create his own profile, “Bob.”
LeapFrog is already a trusted name in our home thanks to their various learning tools. I’m glad to add LeapFrog apps to our iPad because I know the kids will have fun and learn new skills at the same time. I also won’t be worried about them accidentally purchasing in-app products because when you pay for MyRobot Friend, you are paying for the full game. There are no additional items to purchase in order for your children to play the 80 levels in MyRobot Friend. You can’t say that about many apps out there! (Don’t forget to set your restrictions to no in-app purchases for those other apps.)
I’m looking forward to trying out LeapFrog’s other iOS apps as well! I hope you’ll give MyRobot Friend a try.
