Never have I been so proud to be a geek mom. In my school days, the term geek was not used an a compliment (along with nerd), but I think I need a badge that reads, “Proud Geek Mom.” With my professed love for Dr. Horrible and Buffy the Vampire’s musical episode, it’s safe to say that I”m a card carrying member of the club.
Thanks to the new book Geek Mom: Projects, Tips, and Adventures for Moms and Their 21st-Century Families, I can share my geeky passions with my kids. The book is co-written by the bloggers of Wired Magazine’s Geek Mom Blog: Natania Barron, Kathy Ceceri, Carrina Lawson, and Jenny Williams. Reading these talented women’s bios made me feel proud to be a mom. They show that you can be a mom and still pursue your passions.
Maybe you don’t consider yourself a geek. As you read this book, you’ll learn that you’re geekier than you ever thought. Even me. The writers define being a geek as “being passionate about a subject (usually an esoteric one).” Geeky subjects include comic books, fantasy, science fiction or technology. I never told you about the heated discussion I had with a stranger about the Robert Jordan’s Wheel of Time series, did I? It’s a little embarrassing.

We’re totally doing this experiment this weekend! |
Geek Mom not only offers projects, games and craft ideas to encourage your children’s inner geek, but contains tips and empowering facts and history about geekdom. (How many times can I say geek in this post?) The book is split up into chapters with a general theme. The first chapter is all about imagination. Chapter 1 topics range from the importance of superheroes to comic books to how to assemble your own steampunk costumes.
Other chapters cover the digital revolution, how to bring science home, the family kitchen, and crafts. Natania Barron offers an inexpensive way to make your own corset-perfect for your next Renaissance festival outing. I’m especially excited that Kathy Ceceri has a simple recipe to grow my own sour dough starter. I’ve been wanting to do that for years!
Sophia is delving into the world of comic books and I appreciate the list of comic book recommendations based upon your children’s age. Hubby reads Marvel and other comics, but they’re not necessarily little kid friendly. Sophia has been reading Geek Mom over my shoulder and keeps asking when we’re going to try out the projects and experiments. With the Hurricane Sandy Frankenstorm arriving soon, I think we might have some time!
Every mom needs a copy of Geek Mom. Whether your open about your geekiness or still in the closet, you’ll love it! Geek Mom is available for pre-order and will be released October 30.
Want to win your own copy? Just leave a comment telling me about your geeky passions!
