Becoming Body Detectives with LeapFrog Tag Human Body Discovery Pack

I’ve been a lazy mom this summer. The kids and I had a lot of pajama days and screen time. Some of it was educational, but some wasn’t. I’m not beating myself up about it but since school starts next week (eek!), I wanted to get back into the swing of things. Making learning fun is the best ways to keep kids engaged.

I was excited to receive LeapFrog Tag Human Body Discovery Pack for my little scientists. Just like any parent, I try to teach Sophia and Jaxson about staying healthy. We talk about balancing our the junk food we eat with healthy foods.We have a first generation model, so both kids are familiar with the LeapFrog Tag. We only own the LeapFrog Tag books but have never tried any of the other items like the discovery packs. Just like the books, you need a Tag Reader to use the discovery pack.

The first thing Sophia and Jaxson noticed was the game board on the back of the combination fold out growth chart and game board. The takes them through a typical day in the life of a kid. If they make good choices, such as brushing your teeth for two minutes, they can move ahead on the game board. One or two players can play the game at the same time. Playing the game with his sister helped Jaxson understand the concept of taking turns.

Once you unfold the board, there are many different pages where, with the Tag Reader, kids can learn about different aspects of the human body. I especially like the page that talks about melanin (what makes our skin brown) and the shape of our hair follicles. It’s aptly titled “We’re All Different.” Since Sophia and I have discussed skin color and hair type in the past, I’m glad she can see the scientific reason behind it.

While the pack is too advance for Jaxson, who’s almost 3, it’s great for Sophia, who starts first grade next week. Body detective is Sophia’s favorite game in the Human Body Discovery pack. Listening to “far” and “near” clues from the Tag Reader, she hunts for the secret body part. Once she discovers it, the Tag Reader gives her a fun fact about that part of the body. Usually it’s pretty easy to spot the body part, except for when the Tag Reader asked us to find the ear. The ear isn’t pictured on the board.

The Human Body Discovery Pack also comes with glow in the dark stickers that work with the Tag Reader.  The fold out board is very sturdy and will survive even Jaxson’s rough handling. You can definitely pass it on to the younger kids after the older ones outgrow it. The pack retails for $19.99. A Tag Reader is needed to use the board.
