A couple of weeks ago, while I was at the library with Jaxson, he started pointing out different shapes he saw around us. The cool thing was, he got most of the shapes correct. (He’s 2 so I don’t expect perfection–yet.) At first I was impressed because I hadn’t really made much of an effort to teach him his shapes-blame that on the second child syndrome.
Then I realized it was because of our new book, The Shape Song Swingalong by one of our favorite children’s musicians Steve Songs. We saw him live twice last year and each time, the kids did not want to leave. Sophia even helped Steve teach the movements to the mouse song during the National Book Fest! Of course the kids love his music. We own a couple of his CDs, though one has been held hostage in our broken car CD player for months now. (If anyone knows how to fix a 5 disc CD changer after you toddler stuffs in extra discs, let me know.)
Steve gave everyone a preview of his new book and song The Shape Song Swingalong (Barefoot Books) when we saw him at the National Book Festival last summer. The book includes a CD with the catchy song. I frequently find myself singing the chorus when my kids are asleep, “line, line, circle, circle. . .” That’s a warning for you. The book is very colorful and full of shapes, obviously.
I love the David Sim’s vibrant, color illustrations. Also, I love that the children featured in the book are multicultural. Jaxson has started picking out illustrations of kids that he identifies with when we read so it was great to see the children with different color skin in the book. Check out the video above for a preview of the song.
The included CD is convenient stored in the back cover of the book. I’ve never seen a pocket set up this way before and I love it! I’m very happy to add The Shape Song Swingalong to our collection of books. For $10, it’s a great value with the included CD. (CD contains 3 tracks.)
