Jamming On the Electric Guitar With Rocksmith

That’s Adam, who’s hoping Santa brings him a guitar for Christmas

For anyone who’s ever dreamed of being in a rock band or just jamming on an electric guitar, Ubisoft’s Rocksmith game is the real thing. The game actually teaches you how to play a real electric guitar, not just mimic it. To give the game a try, we gathered our friends to find out who secretly wanted to be a Rock Star.

Thankfully it was easy to convince our friend Adam to let us borrow his Xbox for the day. I’m sure it helped that he’s been oogling Rocksmith since the gamewas announced. Adam even set up the game for us. While my kids surrounded him like midget sized groupies, he followed the on screen instructions on how to tune the electric guitar Ubisoft lent us. The tuning instructions were super duper easy. The game talked him through the entire thing.

Ok, so my friend Marcy was the only one with long hair who played Rocksmith during our party.

Since Rocksmith actually teaches you how to play the guitar, it can be challenging at first if you’ve never played any kind of guitar before. Hubby got the hang of it after a couple of songs. My girlfriend Marcy was a good sport and gave it a try.

My friend Brandon tried his hand at the electric guitar but gave it up in pursuit of making gingerbread houses instead. I’m not sure what that says about him, but I love him anyway. While I supervised my kids squeezing bags of icing at the gingerbread house table, the rest of my guests had a good time jamming to Rocksmith.

After playing a couple of songs, I overheard Adam saying, “Great, now I’m going to have to buy an electric guitar.” I think that means he liked it.

If you want to really learn how to play an electric guitar, Rocksmith is the game for you. The song list has classics from The Rolling Stones and Lynard Skynard as well as more recent offerings like Incubus. I know that dates me if I think Incubus is more recent. They’re more recent than The Rolling Stones darn it! Rocksmith comes with a cord that will plug your guitar right into your Xbox, but you’ll have to get your own guitar.
