Everyday I attempt to find out what Sophia learned in school that day. Those of you who are more seasoned parents of school aged children know how challenging this can be. This month, she’s been learning about the first Thanksgiving.
I’m not sure if they’re still teaching the same story as when I was in school, but Sophia brought up the Mayflower and the Pilgrims during dinner one evening. She knows that my parents immigrated to the United States. It makes sense that that she connected my parents’ journey to those of the Pilgrims.
Then she says:
“The people on the Mayflower are more important than us because they came here first.”
After asking a few more questions, I realized that she made this conclusion on her own.
I had no idea where to go from there. First, I brought up that the Native Americans were actually the first people in the United States. From there, I floundered. I remember saying something about everyone comes to the United States to fulfill their dreams. How it doesn’t matter when we arrive in this country, because everybody’s dreams are important.
Yeah. Not my greatest parenting moment.
What would you have done in this situation?
