De-Cluttering So I Can Breathe Better

I wrote this post while participating in a blog tour conducted by Clever Girls Collective on behalf of Claritin®. I have been compensated for my time commitment to the program.

Sometimes I wish my home looked more put together. I dream of color coordinated couch pillows, rugs, curtains and knick knacks. Right now I can only dream because my toddler will destroy everything. His new hobby is climbing onto tables: end, dining, coffee. He doesn’t discriminate.

I might not be ready for nice furniture but I can control how my home looks by de-cluttering. I know if my home had less stuff, it would look neater. I’d have less stuff to keep track off. I might actually, um, dust.

Earlier this year I organized my book stash. It was a bit painful to give away many of my books, but it was necessary. They were taking over my apartment. I realized that the books on m shelves are dusty! Embarrassingly so. I’m sure I could start a dust bunny colony with them.

Unfortunately both hubby and I as well as both kids suffer from seasonal allergies. Once I realized how dusty our home was (is!), it also dawned on me that those not so cute dust bunnies weren’t helping either. So I’m on a de-cluttering kick again.

Once I feel that we our stuff under control, I want to spruce up our home a bit. I might not be able to paint the walls (we paint) or replace big pieces of furniture (out of our budget) but I think I can do a few kid-friendly things too make my home feel stylish and more allergy friendly.

  • Pillows. I’m going to buy some machine washable pillows for my couch. I want them nice and bright! I need more color in my living room than the toys strewn on the floor. They have to be easy to wash since the kids love to snack on the couch and are constantly spilling milk on it.
  • New couch slipcover.  Again this needs to be machine washable. I’ve wanted a new slipcover for ages. Our current one is navy, and while utilitarian, is very boring. It’s summer and our living room could use more splashes of color
  • Fabric shower curtain.  Our bathroom has terrible ventilation. I can’t even leave the door open to air it out after our hot showers because Jaxson likes to run in and stick his hands in the toilet (ick!). We have to keep the door closed. A fabric shower curtain will dry faster than a plastic one. Plus when it starts to get icky, I can throw it into the washing machine.
I sense a theme here! We spend a lot of time in the living room, so just changing our sofa slipcover and pillows will make a huge difference. As long as I wash them regularly I won’t have to worry about dust mites or crumbs.
Now I’m motivated to clear out some clutter so I can shop for a bright colorful slipcover!
How are you bringing summer to your living room?
