What Ever Happened to Fall?

Fall Leaves

We’re in the midst of fall. There’s no denying it. I love hearing the crunch of dry leaves as I walk to my car. I love the oranges, yellows, and browns everywhere I go. I try to stop and enjoy the the view before all the trees shiver naked in the winter sun.

Fall means cool crisp air and Thanksgiving. Not just turkey but seasonal foods like potatoes and carrots.

So why have all the stores just skipped straight to Christmas? Everywhere we go, there’s the Christmas creep. It started even when the Halloween decorations are up. Usually we don’t put up an Christmas decorations in our home until after Thanksgiving.

I guess I’m used to it or just ignore it. Until I see it through the eyes of a child. This past week, as we enter each store decked with Christmas decorations, Sophia asks sadly, “Why do they always skip straight to Christmas? What every happened to fall?”

To me it’s not so much the commercialism of Christmas, but how we are always looking forward into the future. We forget to slow down and enjoy the moment we’re in.

I’m glad that Sophia helps me remember to stop and crunch the leaves.
