Say Beignets!

Over Easter weekend, I took the kids down to Louisiana to hang out with my parents. My sister flew down with me to help with the kids. Actually it was her idea to visit.

I love the cultural diversity of the Washington, DC area, but I sure do miss Louisiana’s southern hospitality. People let you get over when you put on your signal (they use their signals!), they say “Hi” and mean it, and they even offered to grab a high chair for the baby carseat at Coffee Call. The family even shared their table with us.

Coffee Call is the only place (that I know of) to get beignets and cafe’ au lait in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. The cafe’ stayed open very late. It was a great place to hang out after the movies or bar hopping. You’d sit down, eat some delicious fried dough showered in powdered sugar and delicious coffee with milk.

It used to be sort of a dive, until the Super Wal-Mart bought its space. Now it’s in a newer space (built for them and other local usurped businesses). It misses some of its charm, but I’m glad that it’s still there.

As I snapped these pictures, one of the employees must have thought we were tourists. He offered to take a picture of the family. Instead of cheese, we were told to say, “Beignets!”

All weekend Sophia would say “Beignets!” when we took pictures of her.
