I don’t have a style. I don’t mean that I don’t have style. I can put together a decent outfit. But is it really me? Or am I just inspired to copy the fashions in Oprah magazine with my Target knockoffs?
Now that I have 2 kids, my “mom” uniform of jeans and a t-shirt is worn more and more often. It’s just easy to throw them when I have to get up early for preschool drop off. Sometimes I go home and get back in my pajamas. And take a nap. Yep. A nap. The glamourous lifestyle of a stay at home mom.
I have a book of clippings I started in my early new mom days. After about 5 pages, I didn’t even paste in the clothing that I tore out of catalogs and magazines. The torn pages are just stuck in there. 4 years later, they’re still not pasted in.
Just recently, I started ripping pages out of magazines again. Yes, one of those is Oprah magazine. I also have a lot of pages from Anthropologie’s catalog. Until they stopped sending them to me because I could afford $200 for a dress made of less than 1 yard of material. Maybe I can sign up for the catalogs again. Too bad they don’t make plus sizes.
Sometimes I wish I had some sad pathetic story so I could be accosted for What Not to Wear. Alas, I have no fat rolls hanging out under my shirt, own no sweatpants, and get my haircut regularly.
So what IS my style? Like most people, I wear the same outfits over and over (changes with the season of course). What would be the look that shouts, “That’s Kim!”? My problem is that I just shop for fun pieces I like. I don’t think about them going with what I already have. I definitely own the basics: black slacks, black skirts, the little black dress (2!), and a pair of khakis. I keep my bottoms simple and try to find cute tops.
What I would really like is to wear more dresses. Since I’m breastfeeding, it’s not really practical. Unless I want to pull the dress over my head whenever the baby’s hungry. Flashing others is definitely NOT my style. Yes, I know that there are breastfeeding friendly dresses. They just scream mom to me. My solution is to where skirts. Fun and springy since spring is slowly easing in. No to find cute skirts that I don’t have to hem (mid-calf length is not cool for my short legs) or make me look like I’m wearing a muumuu.
Maybe I should just start dressing like the women from Madmen. I love fifties dresses! I know I could sew them myself but I recently realized that I’m a bitch when I don’t get enough sleep. Not even cranky, I’ll admit, I’m bitchy. So for the sanity of myself and my family, I’m attempting not to take on any extra projects.
As for now, I’m hitting the thrift store for new clothes. I love the thrill of the hunt. Yesterday I found a barely worn pair of BabyPhat jeans for $5! In a fat girl size! (I use that term very lovingly, as I am a plus size gal).
I need help.
What about you? Do you have a style?
I've recently become semi-obsessed with fashion, and how to make it into a mom friendly version. I LOVE thrift stores too! I'm new to the area, and just discovered Unique. Any other good ones?
Shhh. Don't tell anyone about that store! They'll find all the cute clothes.
