I Ate Alligator Sausage at Burgersmith (Review)

Cajun Bratwurst from Burgersmith Baton Rouge Louisiana

Can you believe that after living in Louisiana for 20 years I never ate any alligator? Over the weekend, I met up with a very good friend for dinner. After going back and forth, we decided on Burgersmith, a local Baton Rouge burger chain that’s similar to Five Guys. Except Burgersmith offers table service and a huge selection of Louisiana beers on tap. They serve burgers, hot dogs and sandwiches with a Louisiana flair. Here’s my quick Burgersmith review.

Beer list at Burgersmith

As soon as I saw the menu on their website, I new I had to try the Cajun Bratwurst: “a grilled chicken breast, spicy alligator sausage, grilled onions, Creole mustard & Smith Sauce make this our own unique sandwich.” I never had a desire to eat alligator as a child, though many people tried to push it on me, but the the idea of alligator sausage sounded really good. (Apologies for the blurry photos. We were more focused on chatting and eating than taking photos. At least I was.)

Beer Flight From Burgersmith

I started dinner off with a flight of beers: (L to Right) Abita Amber, Burgersmith Ale, Abita AndyGator and LA 31 Biere Noire.  I liked them all except for the Burgersmith Ale. It was too light and barely had any flavor. The Biere Noire was my favorite: dark, malty and went perfectly with my alligator sausage and Smith sliders.

How was the Cajun Bratwurst? The alligator sausage itself was very flavorful but tasted like any other sausage to me. It was seasoned very well with a hint of spiciness at the end. I didn’t care for the grilled chicken breasts that came with it. I would have preferred an entire piece of sausage instead of half of one cut lengthwise.

My friend ordered the Filet Burger, ground from beef tenderloin and we shared the Smith Sliders. Both were good, but they were just basic burgers.  The sweet potato tots were very good. We’d ordered them seasoned with spices and cinnamon but ours arrived without any seasoning. I’d be interested to try them with the seasoning.

Would I return to Burgersmith? Probably, but I won’t go out of my way to eat there. It was good comfort food with a great beer selection plus it was budget friendly. It looks like a great place to hang with friends. Their were also several families there, so it’s definitely a family friendly restaurant.
