With our family’s busy schedule and my travels for work, I realized that it had been several months since we seen some of our friends. My mother-in-law completely cleaned our kitchen and dining room while I was at Book Expo America, so I had to take advantage of it. I wanted to entertain. (Oh, and if my mother-in-law read my blog, I would say a big thank you!).
In the spirit of summer and to make less work for myself, we had friends over for s’mores. I picked up a rotisserie chicken from the store and made a salad with my CSA haul for the main course. After everyone ate, it was time to gather around the fire for s’mores.
Ok, it was really a canister of sterno. It was hot outside and I was concerned about my little kids running around a charcoal grill. That and the last time I had hubby light the charcoal grill, it took him 40 minutes to get a good fire going. So in the interest of fun and laid back, I bought some sterno.
We all gathered at the table and set our marshmallows on fire melted marshmallows. Everyone shared their favorite technique and what they thought was the perfect S’more. Did the outside have to be completely black? My friend Brandon taught Sophia how to blow out her marshmallow when it catches on fire. Brandon even helped Jaxson make his first s’more. Sophia enjoyed the process so much, she started taking orders!
After we stuffed ourselves silly with s’mores, we rolled ourselves to the living room for more adult beveraes (milk for the kids). Eventually we had to send the kids to bed (yippee).
It was such a lovely evening. Once the kids were in bed, we adults just talked and talked. We realized that the last time we had hung out was before Christmas. Way too long. Usually I try to plan some elaborate food when I entertained, but I’m glad that I kept everything low key. The food was good, the s’mores fantastic, and the conversation even better.
Are you going gather around the fire for s’mores this summer?
This post is part of my participation in the HERSHEY’S CAMP BONDFIRE campaign. I received supplies to make s’mores and was compensated for my time. All opinions expressed are mine.
