Hip Hop Dance Experience: A Husband’s Review

Thank you to Ubisoft for sponsoring this post. Please visit Ubi.com to learn more about Ubisoft. I was selected for this opportunity as a member of Clever Girls Collective. #UbiChamps

Our family loves playing dance games on our Wii. When the Clever Girls offered me a chance to try out Ubisoft’s The Hip Hop Dance Experience, I immediately thought of my husband.  He minored in dance in college and wishes he could tap dance. He also cheers for all the tappers and hip hop dances on the reality show So You Think You Can Dance.

So while my husband has no desire to become a professional dance, he loves to dance. I actually feel bad he’s married to my two left feet. At most I’m a little awkward on the dance floor. So, as soon as the game arrived, I handed it over to my husband. (Note: The Hip Hop Experience is rated Teen so we didn’t let my 3 and 7 year old play.) This review is mostly his thoughts because he’s a much better hip hop dancer than me.

The Hip Hop Experience offers top hits by artists you loved way back when (Naughty by Nature’s “Hip Hop Hurray”) to more contemporary songs that you currently hear on the radio (Flo Rida’s “Wild Ones”). (Parenting fail: letting your 3 year old accidentally hear LMFAO’s “Sexy and I Know It” because now he randomly sings the chorus to himself.) It’s a good mix of upbeat songs as well as slightly slower songs for rhythm-deprived folks like me.

Like many of Ubisoft’s dance games, this game offers several different modes: Dance Party, which is what we’re all familiar with; Dance Battle lets friends duke it out to “Drop It Like It’s Hot” (or whatever son you want); practice your moves with Power Skooling; and Dance Marathon so you can dance until you drop. There’s also a work out mode that lets you work up a sweat and get your heart pumping. Dancing is fun form of exercise.

How does this game compare to other dance games? My husband likes that he gets a simultaneous front and back views of the dancer so he can see the dance moves from different angles. He wishes that the “next move” area of the screen was more prominent and slightly bigger. It was hard for him to focus on the current moves and figure out what was coming up next. The next move area is on the side of the screen as opposed to front and bottom like on Just Dance. I suppose if you had a larger television, this wouldn’t be as big of a deal.

The next time we have friends over (and the kids are in bed), my husband wants to pull out the game. The Hip Hop Experience is more fun when you play with friends-you can have up to 4 players at a time. Imagine how amusing it would be to watch after a few adult beverages!

If you’re a hip hop lover and enjoy dance games, The Hip Hop Experience is not to be missed. The game is available for the Wii and on Xbox 360 and is rated T for Teen.

What are your favorite dance games?

As a Clever Girls Collective #UbiChamps member, I received a copy of the game for review.
