Last week during BlogHer, I was luckily enough to score tickets to Broadway musical Porgy and Bess. Thanks to MamaDramaNY, my date Jodifur and I sat 4 rows away from the stage. Yes. As in we could see the sweat trickling down their neck. Seriously.
Jodi is a fellow musical lover and we had a blast comparing different Broardway shows, composers, actors and much more. It made me miss my former life as a theatre professional. Just a teeny bit. Most theatre life is not family friendly unless it’s a desk job. I digress.
Ever since I heard Audra McDonald sing “Your Daddy’s Son” (video) on the Ragtime Broadway Cast Recording, I have loved her voice. I’ve semi-followed her career since then. She’s an extraordinary actress with an astounding voice. Being able to see her perform live made my theatre heart go pitter patter. She is more amazing in person. The role of Bess is a tough role. McDonald made us love Bess, who at the start of the show is not likeable. In McDonald’s hand, Bess became a real person with flaws just like each of us.
We also got to see David Alan Grier in the role of Storm. I had no idea he could sing. And sing well. If you’re in New York City within the next 6 weeks, go see Porgy and Bess. The show closes soon, so don’t miss out!
I received a pair of tickets from MamaDramaNY to see Porgy and Bess. I was not required to post about it, but, it’s Audra McDonald! How could I not?
