Cirque de Soleil: Amaluna in DC

Read our family’s review of Cirque du Soleil Amaluna at the National Harbor and then enter to win 4 tickets!

If I had to use to describe our family’s first Cirque du Soleil experience, the word would be breathtaking. We were invited to a showing of Cirque du Soleil Amaluna at the National Harbor this past weekend and loved every minute.  I’ve been teaching Jaxson, who’s 4 years old, proper etiquette for live shows. The big lesson is to applaud when he likes a performance. Jaxson gleefully applauded every act!

Together the lighting, rock music, sound effects, and of course, the artists created an immersive experience. We truly felt as if we were on a magical island. Seeing it live was electrifying. We held our breath during as the Balance Goddess carefully balanced beautifully carved pine sticks to create a sculpture that lived and breathed with her. My husband loved Cali, half-lizard half-human, and his juggling act. Jaxson loved jumps and twists on the teeterboard while Sophia’s favorite was the Moon Goddess. My favorite was the live music played by the all women rock band. Luckily, you can buy an Amaluna soundtrack.

The story of Amaluna:

Loosely based on Shakespeare’s Tempest, Amaluna invites the audience to a mysterious island governed by Goddesses and guided by the cycles of the moon. Their queen, Prospera, directs her daughter’s coming-of-age ceremony in a rite that honours femininity, renewal, rebirth and balance which marks the passing of these insights and values from one generation to the next.

In the wake of a storm caused by Prospera, a group of young men lands on the island, triggering an epic, emotional story of love between Prospera’s daughter and a brave young suitor. But theirs is a love that will be put to the test. The couple must face numerous demanding trials and overcome daunting setbacks before they can achieve mutual trust, faith and harmony.

Here’s a preview of Amaluna:
