One of the reasons my husband and I moved to the DC area 15 years ago was for the theatre scene. Both of us worked in various regional and summer theatres and wanted a city that was slightly warmer than Syracuse, NY (where we lived before). Note this decision was made before we experienced DC’s snowpocalyspe 1 and 2.
Even though I no longer work in theatre, I still enjoy seeing live theatre. There’s so many good shows in the DC area. I’m proud to say that my kids enjoy it too. We’ve seen several shows at the National Theatre. They’ve all been Broadway caliber shows. A great way to see high quality shows without traveling to New York City.
The next to come to National Theatre is Beautiful: The Carole King Musical. It tells the inspiring true story of King’s remarkable rise to stardom, from being part of a hit songwriting team with her husband Gerry Goffin, to her relationship with fellow writers and best friends Cynthia Weil and Barry Mann, to becoming one of the most successful solo acts in popular music history. Along the way, she made more than beautiful music, she wrote the soundtrack to a generation.
I was shocked at how many of songs I knew, but didn’t realize that she wrote them! During the show you’ll hear songs written by Gerry Goffin/Carole King and Barry Mann/Cynthia Weil, including “I Feel The Earth Move,” “One Fine Day,” “(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman,” “You’ve Got A Friend” and the title song, “Beautiful.”
Beautiful, recommended for pop music lovers age 10 and up, starts Tuesday November 27 and runs through December 30, 2018.
