Gifts for Home Chefs Big & Small
Earlier this year, I was a sent this Curious Chef 5-Piece Pizza Kit and the kids use these tools almost daily. Curious Chef creates a line of kitchen tools that are designed for kids 5 and older. Both of my kids feel like grown-ups when they use the knife in this set. They’ve used it to slice cheese, make a salad and cut fruit. Obviously, you can make pizza with this kit too.
Cooking with kids can get messy, so aprons are a must in our kitchen! I used to have aprons until I picked up a couple of stylish aprons from Flirty Aprons. There’s also kid sized aprons for boys and girls plus aprons for the male chef in the family. You can get matching mother-daughter aprons or even father-son sets. I bought the above set for Sophia and I last year and they’re still going strong.
Flirty Aprons Black Friday Sale: Save 60% off + FREE shipping with code SHOP60. Expires Dec 3, 2015
The kids and I picked up a copy of of ChopChop magazine at the pediatrician’s office. We fell in the love with their bright photos and easy to follow instructions. Which means ChopChop: The Kids’ Guide to Cooking Real Food with Your Family is on our wish list for the holidays. The dishes are healthy and the cookbook is designed to appeal to kids. There’s recipes that can be made with or without an adult’s help.
The kids and I have always wanted to make our own cheese. I love that Grow and Make offers DIY Cheese Kits because it comes with everything I need to make cheese (except the milk). The Farmer’s Cheese Making Kit yields delicious cheese in only 2 hours! What a fun activity to do with the kids (or by yourself). If cheese is not your thing, Grow and Make also has kits for candy making, hot sauce, soda, and even wine making kits for us adults!
How about taking an online cooking class with your kids (or by yourself)? Craftsy has classes on baking and cake decorating, Vietnamese food, and even doughnut recipes! There’s no membership fee; you just pay for the classes that you want. Try before you buy with one of their free classes.
BLACK FRIDAY SALE: Craftsy has slashed over 900 classes for $19.99 or less! AND up to 75% off craft supplies
If you’ve ever wanted to make your own yogurt, I highly recommend the low tech EasiYo Yogurt Maker. You don’t need to plug it in at all. Follow their recipe using live yogurt cultures (from your favorite store bought yogurt) and milk to make your very own yogurt at home. Pour boiling water into the big insulated canister and close it up. The canister keeps the yogurt at the optimal temperature for those yummy yogurt cultures to do their magic. The company also sells yogurt mixes, but we like ours plain.
Want to try new spices without a huge investment? Subscription box RawSpiceBar offers small batches of high quality spices inspired by global dishes. Kits start at $6 a month and also come with kitchen recipes for 3 global dishes. You’ll also receive info about the spices and culinary history of each reason. It’s perfect way to try new to you spices and recipes! Examples of past spice boxes: Malaysian, Memphis, Peruvian, and Ethiopian.
Gourmet salts are a fun way to add some pizzaz to your dishes. Recently at a food expo, I received Salt of the 7 Seas The Gourmet Sea Salt Sampler. It comes with 12 different types of gourmet salts such as Himalayan salt (the pink salt), Lime Ole, red wine infused salt and more! We’ve been trying a few at a time but that lime ole is great with a margarita! If your chef prefers peppercorns, there’s a peppercorn sampler too.
One of my most used cooking tool is the Tramontina 6.5 Qt Enameled Cast Iron Dutch Oven. Coming in for less than $50, this is the best bang for your buck. Not to mention, it comes in this gorgeous red color! Dutch ovens hold heat very well and is perfect for making stews and soups.
The red color makes it dining table worthy–just place the pot on the table to serve! I mean, look at how gorgeous my Vietnamese beef stew looks in it!
I love baking, even if it’s not my area of expertise. Blame it on the fact that I don’t care to follow recipes exactly. However, when I want bake something amazing, I refer to Dorie Greenspan’s Baking: From My Home to Yours cookbook. Her recipes work out every single time! I trust her.
Another must have for home cooks is Barbara Kafka’s Roasting: A Simple Art. We’re using her recipe to roast our Thanksgiving turkey this year.
