PBS Kids’ Peg + Cat Equals FUN!

Kids with Peg + Cat

One of the perks about being a PBS KIDS VIP ambassador is that I learn about cool shows like  PEG + CAT, the newest preschool series that teaches kids about math! The kids and I got a sneak peek and the show is so adorable. I enjoy watching it as much as my kids do. We’ve watched our screener at least once a day.

PEG + CAT (pronounced Peg Plus Cat, get it?) follows the adorable, spirited Peg and her sidekick Cat as the embark on adventures. The new series premieres on PBS KIDS on Monday, October 7 (check local listings) mark your calendar. If you can’t catch it on Monday, you can download “The Chicken Problem” for free from iTunes! ( Offer expires 10/15. ) Heck, watch it now because you’ll want to watch it again on Monday. Here’s a preview:

Even though the show is geared for preschoolers, Sophia enjoys it as well. Jaxson has seen the Peg+Cat’s “The Chicken Problem” so many times, he goes around singing the songs and quoting lines from it. My favorite character is Cat. He makes me laugh out loud with only a few words.

When Jaxson heard that Peg + Cat would be making an appearance at the National Book Festival a couple of weekends ago, that was all he could focus on. Thank goodness they were just as happy to met Jaxson as he was to see them! If you live near the DC area, the National Book Festival is not to be missed! PBS Kids has a huge pavilion with plenty of fun activities.

To add some fun to the mix, PBS KIDS is partnering with Whole Foods to create Peg+Cat healthy recipes and activities for your family. I know firsthand how challenging it can be to introduce my kids to new foods. When I add a little math to our new foods, it becomes more fun!

Starfruit Mango Geometry Salad

I’ve seen starfruit in the grocery stores before but have never tried it. We observed the fruit together before and after I sliced it. They were amazed by the star shape! This was also the perfect time to talk about stars and how many points are in a star. I paired the starfruit with their newest favorite fruit: mangoes. I cut the mangoes into cubes. Who says geometry can’t be tasty?

If you need recipe ideas or ways on how to incorporate math into your daily activities, definitely check out the PBS Kids and Whole Foods healthy kids activities. You can print out recipes, coloring sheets, a colorful meal calendar and more. You can make a pirate themed fruit salad to snack on while you watch the premier of PEG + CAT together on October 7! Don’t forget to check out the PEG + CAT games available online at PBSKIDS.org!

As a PBS KIDS VIP, I periodically receive early screeners and other materials about their shows. We have always been a PBS KIDS family and I’m honored to be a VIP blog ambassador!
