My Ketchup Loving Kid Hates Tomatoes

As a foodie, it drives me crazy when my kids won’t taste my favorite foods. As parents we become obsessed with what our kids will eat or drink as soon as they’re born. It’s funny how one little baby can turn our lives upside down.  See the tomato my chubby little Jaxson is devouring? This post about tomatoes and my youngest is sponsored SocialMoms and (all opinions are mine, of course).

First, I have to confess that digging in my photo archives for this picture was a huge walk down memory lane. Dang, they grow up so fast! In these photos, Jaxson was around 10 months old. He loved to eat and wanted to taste everything. Everything we ate, he wanted to eat. On this occasion, my parents were visiting and we headed to a pick-your-own farm to pick apples. Except we came upon a huge field of tomatoes. Guess what we picked instead?

Jaxson cried until we handed him his own juicy, ripe tomato. He grabbed that sucker like it was an apple and took a huge bite. I was sure he would spit it out because it was his first fresh tomato. Nope. He sat in his carrier and chomped away until it was gone. Then, with tomato pulp and seeds running down his chin, he begged for another one. I remember thinking, Yay! He loves tomatoes. His older sister hated fresh tomatoes.

The tomato feast turned into a ketchup obsession as he became older. He wanted ketchup on his fries, his chicken, his rice, his everything. He would have put ketchup on his ketchup. (I saw that on a t-shirt somewhere). Unfortunately, that’s as far he’s gotten with tomatoes. I don’t think he’s willing touched one since. For a while he wouldn’t even eat tomato sauce on his pasta.

Have you tried explaining to a 3 year old that ketchup comes from tomatoes? So now I have two kids who hate tomatoes. I keep reminding myself that their taste buds will mature. One day.
