Spoken Word Artist Bao Phi: Vietnamese Phở Ever

I’ve been hearing the name Bao Phi on the internets quite a bit recently, so I finally remembered find his website. Bao Phi is a two-time Minnesota Grand Slam champion and a National Poetry Slam finalist, Bao Phi has appeared on HBO Presents Russell Simmons Def Poetry.

Check out this video animated by Ash Hsie for his new poems for the newest issue of The Asian American Literary Review.

He’s in your face about race, stereotypes and Vietnamese people. He says what I think but don’t always say it. As a first generation Vietnamese, I can identify with many of his poems. My family watched plenty of Paris by Night Vietnamese concert videos, where Viet pop stars emulated Madonna and other American performers.

Bao Phi is in DC this week for several events. If you’re in the area, check it out.

I think I’m going to buy my first spoken word album. (Listen more on his site.)

Dude and I want a shirt that says Vietnamese Phở Ever.
