We actually have the Rosetta Stone program (for me and for the toddler) though we've yet to start it. FOR SHAME. I just this year decided to get some Viet/English kid books to start the process.

Peter, like you, grew up with Viet as his first language, but once he learned English his proficiency lagged. He now only speaks it when he has to, and isn't the person I ask for advice on what a word means. I have a few other friends that speak it all the time at home, so they're better at the subtle differences if I need help.

For me it's hard because the tones and accents aren't ones I'm used to in English. Peter tends to make fun if I pronounce something wrong (in a joking manner, but still NOT helpful!). It's easier for me to read since it's pretty phonetic, but I have trouble with speaking, so I don't.

This all means that our daughter pretty much only knows how to say Noi (and doesn't realize that his mother and father are two different kinds of "Nois" ERRRRR). It's so hard being the one that stays home with the kids who doesn't speak the language you're trying to at least expose them to.

Since I am now engaged to a man with 3 children .... my 11 year old daughter and I have claimed Wedensday night as "Our Night". I run a business and she gets ready for bed around 8:30pm - so that really only leaves us 3 hours. The nice thing is that we plan for it every week. It is something we both look forward to and it is time she knows she has my undivided attention. Our nights range from trips to see an early movie, getting our nails done, walking around the mall (you dont have to buy anything just walking and taking in the sites and talking) ... but one of her favorites is going to 5 and Below or a Dollarstore. Kids can ALWAYS find something they want. In the summer local parks offer great scenery. You can also look at the local Home Depot or Lowes stores as they offer how-to craft classes for kids.

I will just add this ... setting a weekly time is what was most important for my daughter. No matter what is going on in our family's world or our world at work/school, we always have our wednesday night. Just hanging out together and letting everyone know this is our time I found to be exactly what she wanted :)

I agree with you, that this war is perpetuated by the media, but I do think some Moms buy into it. I don't know why. I write a blog in tandem with a SAHM, and I am a working mother. We enjoy each other's unique perspective, and have found that partnering up to accomplish things is rewarding, and fulfilling. No matter if you are a working Mom, or a SAHM, it is so helpful to have another Mom to talk to who is going through the same things you are.

Safiyyah and I just started doing these. On our first one, we had lunch at the Cheesecake Factory in Columbia, then spent the rest of the afternoon in the mall. I treated her to some much-needed tights and an on-sale swimsuit. Then we went up to the Apple Store so that she could play some Dora games on their Macs. They also have a carousel and a play area that are great any day. On another of our dates, we just walked to the library and picked out some good books and talked. I really felt the bond between us deepen with this quality time, something which had been missing since baby no 2 came along.

I think mother-daughter dates are so important. Especially for me, since I have two boys, D can feel starved for girl time. So we make it a point to occasionally split up along gender lines for some Father-sons/Mother-daughter dates.
