I love how the internet is one giant game of seven degrees of separation (or Kevin Bacon as my theatre friends and I played).
My friend Laurie introduced me to a Maria Leonard Olsen, who wrote the book Mommy, Why’ Your Skin So Brown? Both Maria and I have interracial families and write about being mistakened for the nanny. Funny how that experience helps you connect with another person.
We chatted over email and Maria invited me to come on her radio talk show Inside Out on WPFW (a DC radio station). Things moved really quickly and I was on the show yesterday!
Along with Raquel Benavidez of It’s A Family Affair podcast, we discussed “Raising Multiracial Children in a Category-Obsessed Society.” The hour flew by. There’s a lot to unpack in that topic.
You can listen to our archived show on WPFW site here.
I guess I can cross off “Being on the Radio” off my bucket list. But I have to write it on my list first.
