I’m so excited that it’s Friday! Not just because the weekend is coming up, but because my husband usually has Fridays off. That means I get to sleep in an extra hour because he feeds the kids breakfast and takes Sophia to school. For this sleep deprived mom, I’ll take extra zzzs whenever I can!
There’s two really cool events happening this weekend that you should add to your itinerary:
Cinderella: A Vietnamese Tale presented by Vietnamese Student Association of U of Md
Saturday, March 2 at 7PM
Where: The Hoff Theater, Stamp Student Union, Campus Drive & Union Lane, College Park , MD
Cost: FREE
One of my favorite Vietnamese folk tales is the story of Tấm Cám, which is similar to the Western story of Cinderella. Except Tấm is a little more clever and resourceful than Cinderella. Every year the VSA puts on a Family Night and this year they’re offering a musical.
According to their Facebook event page, you’ll hear music from popular artists like Beyonce, Maroon 5, Justin Bieber, and B.O.B. (At least I know who 3 of those people are. I don’t feel too old.) What a great way to make a traditional story more modern and accessible to a younger audience.

If you’re looking for new books to read with your children, definitely head to this discussion featuring Terry Hong of Smithsonian’s BookDragon blog, YA author Ellen Oh of the Prophecy series, and author Natalie Dias Lorenzi of Flying the Dragon. They will discuss the evolution and revolution in Asian Pacific American children’s literature.
Now that Sophia’s reading skills have grown, I need to look beyond picture books and make sure she’s exposed to books with diverse characters. I’m sure to discover some at this discussion. There will be books available for sale starting at noon and the authors on the panel will be ready to autograph your copies.
