Things I'm Currently Obsessed With

Sometimes I wish I was still childless so I can hole myself up somewhere and watch tv for 10 straight hours or read a book all the way through. Here's a few things I wouldn't mind not showering for a couple of days so I can finish.

Battlestar Galactica. I know I'm totally late to the game on this tv series. I have a soft spot for well crafted science fiction and fantasy shows (and books). Hubby and I watched the Battlestar Galactica mini-series when it first aired. Soon after, we got rid of our fancy cable so we never saw the tv series. Thanks to the Netflix, I've been watching the tv series. I'm only on Season 2, but it's good. Really good. If you haven't seen it yet, you should.

The Black Count by Tom Reiss. I just started reading this book yesterday and I can't get enough of it. The Black Count is a biography about the father of famous author Alexandre Dumas (of The Counte of Monte Cristo fame), also of the same name. The first Alex Dumas was a highly successful general in Napoleon's army. What made him so different? Plus He was born to a black slave mother and a fugitive white French nobleman in Saint-Domingue (present-day Haiti). I had no idea that a mixed race person was able to accomplish so much during that time. I'm only 20 pages in and Reiss' easy but informative writing style has drawn me in.

The Inheritance Trilogy by NK Jemisin. I discovered her first book, The Hundred Thousand Kingdoms, while browsing my library's ebooks. One of the reasons I was borrowed the book was that I've never knowingly read a fantasy book written by a woman of color. A superficial reason, but I'm glad I picked it up.  Sometimes it takes me a while to really get a feel for the new world a fantasy author has created. It's a bit disorienting, like jet lag. I had no problems with The Hundred Thousand Kingdoms. Jemisin created a brilliant mythology for the world. I think that's what sold me on the series. I have books 2 & 3 on loan from my library but I'm afraid to start reading them. I'll probably ignore all of my work and the kids if I do.

What about you? What are you currently obsessed with?

I received a review copy of The Black Count. I pay for my own Netflix-it keeps the kids occupied and me sane. Plus I big heart my library. There are affiliate links in this post.
