Mad Science: Dry Ice Experiments for Kids

I've been feeling guilty since Jaxson started walking that Sophia and I haven't been able to do as many science experiments like we used to. The other day I save one of my packages because there was still dry ice in the cooler. Luckily we still had some left by the time Sophia came home from school.

I did a super quick search for science experiments with dry ice. We had supplies around the apartment for 2 of them. As I prepped the first experiment, Sophia and I discussed the properties of dry ice (CO2), and how it doesn't melt into a liquid, but dissolves into a gas form.

First we placed some dry ice a soda bottle, then stretched a balloon over the bottle's opening. It didn't take long for the dry ice to inflate the balloon. Even Jaxson was amazed. We set it aside to let it inflate even more while we moved onto the next experiment.

Experiment #2 was making our carbonated water. Now THAT was quite dramatic. I filled a glass with water and some pumpkin pie flavored syrup. I added the dry ice and immediately it dissolved into a gas. Sophia was so excited she jumped up and down! "I feel like a real scientist!" she exclaimed.

Jaxson had a blast blowing away the CO2 off the top of the glass. He laughed each time he blew away the CO2. After a few minutes, we all tasted the now cold and fizzy water.

I had the brilliant idea to try the same experiment with orange juice. As I dropped the dry ice into the juice, I asked Sophia to make a hypothesis. Which would produce more bubbles and gas, the water or the juice? The juice foamed a lot more than bubble, but we all enjoyed drinking fizzy orange juice at the end.

I'm glad I took advantage of the moment for a bit of science. I know Sophia wishes they studied more science in kindergarten so I try to encourage her love of it at home.

Have you done any science lately?
